The whole funda of Bits and Bytes!

You must be always wondering why my internet speed is slow in spite of your ISP(Internet Service Provider) promising you with several Mbps. Well, the basic misconception behind all this is that your computer measures data in bytes (eg : kilobytes, megabytes) and your ISP measures the same in bits!. Its that simple!. so whatever speed your ISP says will be 8 times more than whatever you experience practically! you have a 2 Mbps connection? ,well then you must be getting a speed of 2/8 ,ie .25 KBps! ie 256 KBps.
Whenever you see speed in Mbps or Kbps(mega or kilo bits per second) divide the numerical by 8 to get the actual data transfer speed!. As convection "b" is taken as bits and "B" as bytes to avoid confusion!
so next time whenever your friend says that he has a 1 Mbps connection, He refers to bits per second and not bytes!. Your friend will be able to download 1 MB of data in 8 seconds and not in 1 single second!

Here is the basic data conversion table!
